Alexander Kathleen of the USDA Forest Service writes an article titled "Benefit of Trees in Urban Areas." that provides interesting statistics put into a very different perspective:

“Planting trees remains one of the cheapest, most effective means of drawing excess CO₂ from the atmosphere. A single mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 lbs. /year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings. Over a 50-year lifetime, a tree generates $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water, and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion.”

The environmental value of trees is very important, and the increased number of trees in the world before provided many resources and variables to rightfully rank the trees as an ecological powerhouse. The issue of sustainability wasn’t a problem with a surplus of trees, and with effort, reforestation would make sustainability a lesser issue to worry about versus being a global state of emergency. With some effort, we can all make a real conservational change.
